Es war Dr. Hunt mehr als jede andere Person, die Lord Elgin half, seine Sammlung zu erhalten, und sogar Elgins urspr\u00fcngliche Absicht, Abg\u00fcsse und Zeichnungen anzufertigen, zu \u00fcbertreffen, indem er die osmanischen Beh\u00f6rden in Athen mit Geschenken und Geld bestach. W\u00e4hrend er immer insgeheim darauf hoffte, einen falschen Vorwand als Diplomat zu verwenden, um sich eine Privatsammlung auf der Seite verschiedener Antiquit\u00e4ten aus allen Teilen Griechenlands zu sammeln.<\/p>\n<p>Als das Special Select Committee pr\u00fcfte, ob die britische Regierung die Sammlung von Elgin kaufen sollte, verwies Hunt auf die Existenz der italienischen \u00dcbersetzung des Firman, die er aufbewahrt hatte. Er bestand auch darauf, dass es ihnen gelungen war, die Murmeln zu erwerben, weil Elgin der britische Botschafter war und kein Privatmann eine so gro\u00dfe und wichtige Sammlung h\u00e4tte erwerben k\u00f6nnen. Bald darauf wurde er von Konstantinopel nach Gro\u00dfbritannien zur\u00fcckgebracht. Inzwischen war Elgin nicht in der Lage, seine ihm geschuldeten Geb\u00fchren zu bezahlen.
